Sorry Dave, unfortunately this is the simplest way. Due to regulation fears, no US exchange would like to sell QRK for USD. The only way to buy Quark directly for ‘sovereign money’ is on Bter through Chinese Yuan and I am guessing you don’t have that either!
With most altcoins, there are two steps involved – first get Bitcoin, then exchange Bitcoin to the altcoin that you want. It is hard to get a direct USD -> altcoin step. I wrote to you, if this doesn’t work out, let me know and I’ll try to help.
